| Milestones
in OSP History: |
1946:
Donald Brewster purchased a tract of land west
of Savannah, Georgia, to build a facility to race cars. He died
of a heart attack before completing his project and the property
lay dormant for 5 years. |
1951:
Joe Blount purchased the speedway, added the
finishing touches and staged a motorcycle event in March, 1951.
The first automobile race was held on May 6, 1951, under the
promotion of Sam Nunis, one of the most highly regarded promoters
of his era. Johnnie Parsons, the 1950 Indianapolis 500 winner,
was the winner of that first race. |
1953:
Oglethorpe
joined the North Florida Racing Association and hosted such
drivers as Joe Weatherly, Fireball Roberts, and Speedy Thompson
|
1954:
Oglethorpe hosted the 5th event on the NASCAR
Grand National circuit (now called the
Nextel Cup) for the
first time. Al Keller of Buffalo, NY scored the win in a Hudson
Hornet built by George Miller. Buddy Baker was second, retaining
his Grand National division points lead.
The polesitter was Herb Thomas with a
qualifying speed of 63.202, but he broke a right rear hub with
3 laps remaining in the race and finished 10th. |
1955:
The popular Grand National circuit returned in
the spring, and Lee Petty of Randleman, NC wheeled his Chrysler
to a 4-lap victory over the field while Don White raised the
excitement level trying to recover from a 4-lap pit stop. Attendance
for the event was 3,750 with 18 cars finishing the race. |
The
Sixties:
With growing interest in asphalt racing, the
new Savannah Speedway opened. Conflicts often developed between
OSP and the new track. Blount tried a variety of events, including
horse racing, to fill the stands, but his efforts failed and
the track closed its doors to weekly stock
car racing events. |
1976:
After years of unsuccessful attempts to restore
the speedway to glory, Blount turned the lease over to Curtis
Culver and Clem Burnsed. Culver fell victim to ill health and
later died, leaving Burnsed to continue his interests in local
racing. |
1977:
Emory Stone assumed the Culver interest in the track
and the track would host
a special event called the Dirt Track 100 and introduce an unheard
of purse of $20,000. A new surge in dirt track racing was coming
on the heels of lighter cars such as the
new Camaros and Firebirds. |
1981:
Oglethorpe hosted a 100 lap National Dirt Racing
Associated (NDRA) event with a purse of $45,000.
The legendary Buck Simmons would win that race and take home the
first place prize of $10,000. |
1982:
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) returned
to the dirt track with NASCAR's Jim France on hand to congratulate
the series champ, a young Florida rider named Billy Labrie. |
1984:
Oglethorpe is invited to join the NASCAR Winston
Racing Series. In the very first year, David Into, a Hardeeville,
SC architect, captured both a NASCAR Weekly
Racing Series Regional and National
title. He pocketed $25,000 in cash awards from NASCAR. Into
was crowned at the first speedway banquet organized by the OSP Ladies Auxiliary, lady racer Lynn Turner,
President. |
1987:
A near-capacity crowd was on hand for a truck
and tractor pull event at the speedway held
in March of 1987. |
1988:
Enduro Racing is introduced to the Savannah community
with much success, and the sprint cars come to town again. |
1991:
Oglethorpe celebrates its 40th Anniversary with
a special Founder's Day on May 6. The speedway is recognized
for producing more drivers in the top 16 NASCAR Weekly
Racing Series
regional
standings than any other facility. The support division, Street
Stock, had reached over 60 regular drivers and the program had
to be shifted to accomodate
the growing field with both an A & B main event. |
1994:
David Into announces his retirement from the NASCAR Weekly
Racing Series. He has won ten of the last 11 Late Model
championships with only Robert Elliott knocking him off the
perch in 1987. |
1995:
"Flying" Brian Turner wins the Late Model championship crown
without a single feature victory. A feat yet to be
duplicated at OSP. |
1997:
Donnie Bazemore wins his second consecutive title in the Late
Model division becoming only the second man to win two titles in
OSP's top level division. |
1998:
Ricky Bozard wins his third straight title in the Street Stock
class. He also is crowned the NASCAR regional champion for
the second straight year. Chris Usry wins the first
"Showdown on the Coast" event at OSP. |
1999:
The
2nd Annual "Showdown on the Coast" is won by Bobby Oglesby. |
2000:
Kent Strickland becomes only the third driver in
OSP Late Model history to win two consecutive titles under
NASCAR. Tuck Trentham of Florida wins the 3rd Annual
"Showdown on the Coast". |
2001:
OSP
celebrates it's 50th Anniversary with the introduction of the
Top 20 drivers of all-time and the new "Wall of Fame" honorees.
All are honored during the 4th Annual "Showdown on the Coast"
which is won for the second straight year by Tuck Trentham. |
2002:
A
sixteen-year-old Robert Diekemper wins the Street Stock crown
after winning an unbelievable seven feature races. Ivedent
Lloyd wins the first 150-lap Late Model feature at the 5th
Annual "Showdown on the Coast" in October. |
2003:
Bobby Oglesby becomes the first driver since David Into to win
three Late Model titles and win them in three consecutive years.
Jacksonville's Johnny Collins puts his Dodge Late Model into
victory lane at the 6th Annual "Showdown on the Coast" in
October. |
2004:
After 20 years of trying, Bobby Morris captures the OSP Late
Model title for car owner Dennis Morris. He also finishes
fourth in the NASCAR region pocketing over $16,000 in cash.
The 7th Annual "Showdown on the Coast" champion is 17-year-old
Jordie Nipper of Cochran, GA. |
2005:
Twenty-year-old Robert Diekemper becomes the youngest driver to
ever win a Late Model championship at OSP. 18-year-old
rookie Sean Meeks ends up in second place. Young Guns
Shoot-Out debuts in February of 2005. Alabama's DeWayne
Johnson passes Patrick Sheltra for the lead on the last lap of
the Budweiser 150 to cap off a fantastic "Showdown" weekend. |

A Track Rich in History |

Oglethorpe
Speedway Park celebrates it's 56th Anniversary in 2007. The
half mile speedway has entertained race fans since March of
1951 when championship motorcycle racing
debuted in Savannah. The
first stock car race took place at the historic half mile in
May of 1951. Johnnie Parsons was the first winner.
Parsons was the defending Indy 500 winner that year.

The half mile clay speedway hosted the NASCAR Grand National
Series (today's Nextel Cup Series) in March of 1954 and
1955. The winner of the race on March 28, 1954 was Al
Keller in a 1954 Hudson. Keller won $1000 for winning
the 200-lap race while Buck Baker took home $650 for
finishing in second place. The Flock brothers (Fonty
and Bob) each won $25 for finishing 11th and 12th.
The other NASCAR Grand National race was held on March 6,
1955 and was won by Lee Petty. His son, Richard Petty,
signed in as a crew member that day. Herb Thomas
competed that day along with Curtis Turner, Junior Johnson
and Buck Baker.
Many of today's most recognized racers have turned laps
at Savannah's famous speedplant. Former NASCAR Winston Cup
champions Ned Jarrett, Glenn "Fireball" Roberts,
David Pearson, Joe Weatherly, Buddy Baker,
Dale Earnhardt and Speedy Thompson
have competed at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.
Current
owner, Emory Stone, purchased the speedway in 1977. Since
then, Oglethorpe Speedway Park has led the way for many tracks
in the area. Stone was the first promoter to offer dirt racers
a purse of over $45,000. He was also the first dirt track
to sign on with the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series in 1984. Finally,
through Stone's guidance the Enduro Series was born. This
affordable division of racing took the short track industry
to new levels. Many races had over
125 competitors racing for 150 to 300 laps with purses as
high as $10,000 to win.
In 1984, Oglethorpe Speedway Park re-entered the NASCAR record
books. Oglethorpe Speedway Late Model
champion David Into became the first national
champion for NASCAR's short track series.
Into took home a $25,000 pay day for his 1984 efforts.
Oglethorpe Speedway Park developed a number of drivers
through it's weekly racing program. David Into
dominated the Late Model scene winning an unprecedented ten
track titles between 1984 and 1994. The only driver to
knock Into out of the title spot was Robert Elliott in 1987.
Since that time, "Flying" Brian Turner (1995), Donnie
Bazemore (1996 & 1997), Hal McGraw (1998), Kent Strickland
(1999 & 2000), Bobby Oglesby (2001, 2002 & 2003), Bobby
Morris (2004) and this past season (2005) 20-year-old Robert
Diekemper became the youngest driver to have captured the prestigious Late Model crown
at OSP.
In 2005, OSP entertained over 600 competitors. Many of
the stars of tomorrow cut their teeth at the speedway in
February during the first ever Coca-Cola Young Guns
Shoot-Out. Bodine Massengill and Zack VanDerbeek
claimed the honors for late models and modifieds. The
trend of younger drivers continued in the regular season as
over a dozen drivers under the age of twenty competed on a
weekly basis at OSP. The future is bright for OSP race
fans!
The historic half mile speedway has sprouted careers and
entertained hundreds of drivers for the past half century in the
Late Models, Street
Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks, Go Karts, Enduro Series, Powder Puff, 440 Series and Queen Bees.
In 2007 for the first time over twenty years, OSP elected to
not be NASCAR sanctioned.
The tradition of championship racing in a
family oriented facility lives on as Oglethorpe Speedway Park runs weekly
racing events on Friday nights
at 8:00pm. Late
Models, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and 440s
make up the weekly schedule.
