(Savannah, GA)
Seventeen-year-old Alan Mondus of Lakeville, Minnesota is
ready to head south and compete for the title of the
nation’s top young gun at the 2nd Annual
Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out presented by Stock Car and
Circle Track Magazine along with Sport Clips for Men. The
United States Modified Tour regular will join the defending
champion, Zach VanderBeek, as representatives of the
exciting modified tour.
Alan Mondus joined
the Midwest’s premier modified racing series in 2005 as a
regular, and although the season did not go as hoped he
gained incredible experience and knowledge sharing the track
with legendary seven time champion Kelly Shyrock, and
chasing top modified veterans of Tommy Meyer, Mark Noble,
Cory Dripps and some of the best modified drivers in the
country.
Mondus, who is
finishing his senior year in high school with honors, hopes
to capitalize on that experience he gained on the tour and
follow in the footsteps of fellow USMTS regular VanderBeek
when visiting the Savannah half mile in February.
“Alan will be
competitive at this event,” said Jim VanderBeek, father of
last year’s modified title winner. “We were the ones
encouraging Alan and his family to attend the event. We
enjoyed every aspect of the race last year.”
Team Mondus will
debut a brand new “Open Special” B & B Chassis at the Young
Guns race on Febraury 2, 3 and 4. The car is new design by
Minnesota veteran chassis builder Paul Berger.
“We’ve been working
with Alan and his dad for the past couple of years and this
car is the result of the team’s input to the design of a car
for USMTS rules and style of racing,” said Berger. “We are
very excited about the new car and cannot wait to see it hit
the race track in Georgia that first weekend of February.”
Alan Mondus
re-affirmed his excitement for the new design and it’s debut
at the Coca-Cola Young Guns race at Oglethorpe Speedway
Park.
“I know the field
will be filled with a talented group of drivers and the best
equipment,” said Mondus. “It will be refreshing to compete
with a field of drivers that do not have twenty to thirty
years of experience in modifieds as I do on the USMTS. That
competition is tough, regardless of the outcome.”
The 2nd
Annual Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out presented by Stock Car
and Circle Track Magazines along with Sports Clips for Men
will take place at Oglethorpe Speedway Park on February 2, 3
and 4, 2006. The event will be part of the 5th
Annual Winternationals offering a special showcase race
event for drivers aged 23 and younger in the open wheel
modifieds and dirt late model divisions. Racers will have
the opportunity to display their talents in front of
professional motorsport team representatives in a
“motorsports combine”.
The weekend will also feature racing in the
Crate Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks and 440
division with a new division to be announced later this
week. For more information, contact the speedway at
