Savannah, GA
- The conclusion to a double header weekend at
Oglethorpe Speedway Park saw Jacksonville, Florida’s David
Browning take home his first career win on the Fastrak
Champions Tour. Browning had been chasing fellow
Jacksonville hot shoe Steve Whitener for the majority of the
40-lap main event when Whitener was involved in an accident
with the lapped car of Conyers, Georgia's
Gary Phillips.
Steve Whitener looked to have the field covered after
winning the prelude on Friday night, grabbing the fast timer
award and the leading the first twenty-six laps of the main
event for the traveling Fastrak Champions Tour. Whitener
came up on the lapped car of Gary Phillips near the
flagstand snaring the right quarter panel which sent
Phillips into the wall hard and then off the turn one
embankment. Fastrak officials placed Whitener at the back of
the field which Whitener protested valiantly the remainder
of the evening.
“It is an unfortunate set of circumstance for Steve,”
explained Fastrak founder Stan Lester. “But, you cannot just
take a man out of the race like that. It does not matter if
you are leading the race or not.”
David Browning took advantage of the situation to inherit
the lead. The current series point leader kept Shane Riner
in his mirror along with young gun Branden Yawn both from
Rincon. Branden was passed by his uncle Glenn Yawn on the
final lap while Shane Smith rounded out the top five
drivers.
Two more young guns were in sixth and seventh with Steven
Howard besting Matthew Daniels. Anthony Meadows, Roger
Arowood and Jody Palmer completed the top ten finishers from
the Fastrak Champions “GM Performance 40” on Saturday night.
The Love’s Seafood “Catfish 50” was also on the racing card
for Saturday night at the historic half mile speedway. Only
fifteen cars signed in for the $1000 to win race and
Midway’s Donald Norby was the class of the field. Norby led
all but the first five laps of a race that was cut to only
39 laps due to the numerous cautions. “Rapid” Ray Collins
ended up in second ahead of current points leader Chris
Litchfield, Albert Cosnahan and Brian Barnes. The top five
were the only cars remaining on the lead lap at the
checkered flag.
The Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks went flag to flag
without a caution on Saturday night. Hardeeville, South
Carolina’s Dan Douglas claimed his second straight victory
in the entry level class of racing at OSP. Points leader
Terron Roberts was second ahead of a hard charging Buster
Kleckley. Walter Sills and Loy Cribbs rounded out the top
five with Andy Stallings, Grant Grotyohann, Doc Leggett,
Anthony Parker and John Loomis completing the first ten
drivers across the finish line.
Four Star Security 440 racing rounded a full weekend of
championship racing action. Hilton Head, South Carolina’s
Jimmy Swanson returned to the half mile with a new rocket
ship. Swanson started near the rear of the field and was
leading with four laps to go. He cruised to his first OSP
win of the season ahead of Michael Bean, Jason Rewis, Scott
Graham and WR Rewis. Matt “New Shoes” Prescott, Scott Maxey,
Brian Nerich, Sean Swilpa and Clate Fail, Jr. completed the
top ten Saturday night in the 440 feature.
The speedway will crank back up again this Friday, June 3. A
full program of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series is on the
calendar including races for the Coca-Cola Late Models,
Loves Seafood Street Stocks, Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks,
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks and the Four Star
Security 440. There will also be FREE Rides in the Race Cars
for race fans of all ages. The gates open at 6pm. Racing
begins at 8pm. FREE Rides will take place during
intermission on Friday night. Additional information is
available by contacting the speedway at 912-964-8200 or by
