CHAMPIONSHIP MODIFIED TOUR OPENS & CLOSES AT OGLETHORPE SPEEDWAY PARK IN 2006

(Savannah, GA)   The new Championship Modified Tour (CMT) will have it’s 2006 inaugural race calendar bookended with a pair of races at the historic half mile speedway Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The open wheel stock cars have been known for some of the most dynamic racing at the clay oval for the past several years during special events.  The North Carolina based tour will open it’s schedule the first weekend of February at OSP and then conclude their season at the track’s 9th Annual “Showdown on the Coast” in October.  (FULL STORY)

GO KART WINTER SHOOT-OUT SERIES RETURNS TO ACTION SATURDAY

(Savannah, GA)  The highly popular winter-time go kart racing series at Oglethorpe Speedway Park will return to action this Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00pm.  The Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series race on December 17 was rained out and this past weekend’s Christmas celebration has kept area karters from competition for two weeks.  Saturday’s double feature format should create some great racing action.  (FULL STORY)

MINNESOTA’S MONDUS PRIMED FOR YOUNG GUNS

(Savannah, GA)   The first day of operation for Chatham County Paintball at Oglethorpe Speedway Park was a success according to it’s creators.  Twenty-four paintball enthusiasts were on hand for the first day of open competition at the recently built field located in the wooded areas of the speedway property in Pooler. (Savannah, GA)  South Carolina’s Tim Broschard picked up two feature victories on Saturday afternoon at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  Broschard won the main event for the Stock Medium before picking up the top spot for the Outlaws during OSP’s second week of the 5th Annual Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series.   The victory in the Stock Medium class has now moved him to within one point of divisional leader Carl Bobst.  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  Springfield’s Bobby Taylor nearly clean swept the inaugural “Turkey Trot 300” at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  Taylor won three main events for the Go Karts with victories in the Stock Light, Stock Medium and Senior Stock Heavy divisions.  He was fastest qualifier on Friday afternoon for all but one division also picked up one heat race win on his way to Saturday’s big day.  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  The 8th Annual Showdown on the Coast at Savannah’s historic half mile speedway, Oglethorpe Speedway Park, continues to show a steady increase in competitor entries.  Speedway management raised concerns over rapidly rising fuel costs and that it may force some racers and race fans to stay home the weekend of October 19, 20, 21 and 22 instead of traveling to Savannah for the area’s largest motorsports event of the year.  (FULL STORY)

$60,000 RAISED AT MEAT LOAF BENEFIT CONCERT

(Pooler, GA)   The Meat Loaf “Hurricane Relief” Benefit concert which took place Saturday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park raised over $60,000 for the Red Cross and two other organizations aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina.  All of the proceeds raised from this past weekend’s concert were donated after everyone from Meat Loaf to his band members to the host facility, Oglethorpe Speedway Park, donated their regular earnings to the relief efforts along the Gulf Coast.(FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  Three rookie drivers visited Oglethorpe Speedway Park’s victory lane on Friday night.  Eighteen-year-old Sean Meeks and fellow rookie-of-the-year contender Jay Hendricks became the twelfth and thirteenth different feature winners in the highly competitive Coca-Cola Late Model division while rookie Love’s Seafood Street Stock driver Mike Helmly won for the first time as well.  It was the first time in the track’s fifty-four year history that three rookie racers have won on the same night at OSP.  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  ‘Flat Footin’ Casey Barrow broke out of a season long slump winning his first career NASCAR feature in the Coca-Cola Late Model division.  The recent high school graduate had a win snatched from under him earlier this season when he was three pounds light across the scales and was leading the race one week ago before losing the top spot on a late race restart.  Barrow made no mistake on Friday night winning a tough battle with another hungry driver Lonnie Brant.  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  Three new drivers visited victory lane at the historic Oglethorpe Speedway Park during Friday night’s NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series event.  Glenn Yawn finally broke into the winner’s circle besting the field of Coca-Cola Late Models.  Anthony Parker picked up his first career NASCAR victory after making a last lap pass and Gene Thompson set the tone for the upcoming Mini Stock Challenge between Oglethorpe Speedway Park and Swainsboro Raceway winning the four cylinder race in his first 2005 season appearance. They’re baaaaack!! Vintage Thunder, the original legends of stock car racing, is returning to Oglethorpe Speedway Park. “Fan reaction to our 2004 races was fantastic,” said Bob Moore, National Vintage Racing Association Race Coordinator, former Grand National driver and vintage racecar owner. According to Bob Furnad, NVRA President, another vintage car owner, “The vintage drivers were challenged by the big Oglethorpe 5/8 mile clay and are looking forward to having another crack at it.”  The National Vintage Racing Association visits the Pooler, Georgia super fast clay oval this Saturday night. Five classes of vintage cars will see action at Screven; the Limited Sportsman (six cylinder and flathead V8s), Modified Sportsman (1930-54 coupes and sedans with overhead V8s), Late Model Sportsman, Late Model Modified (1955-1967) and winged Open Modifieds (racing frames with 1930-1967 bodies).

SPEEDWAY PLANS BOAT CRASH-FEST THIS FRIDAY

(Savannah, GA)  It’s the “Tournament of Destruction” boat style this Friday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The historic half mile speedway will host it’s second annual “Waterless Boat Races” presented by Custom Marine of Statesboro. The wild, crash-filled event features cars pulling old boats around the track.  There are no trailers used in this smash it up event.  Drivers merely drag their boats while attempting to dislodge their competitors boats from their car.  The last driver with his boat intact and attached to their car is declared the winner...(FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  World champion monster truck Grave Digger clean swept the three night stint this weekend at Oglethorpe Speedway Park and his “No Rules” style of crushing cars did not disappoint the crowd of enthusiastic fans.  Randy Brown piloted Grave Digger to monster truck freestyle titles all three nights of the USHRA Monster Jam Summer Heat.  The Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina driver also picked up a victory in Friday night’s monster truck drag races.  He fell short in drag racing to Milton, Florida’s Jim Jack and his Reptoid monster truck on Thursday and Saturday. (Savannah, GA)  The weather woes that have dampened the spirits of race fans and racers competing at Savannah’s historic half mile speedway, Oglethorpe Speedway Park, have once again been dealt the losing hand.  The rain storms that moved through the Savannah area on Saturday afternoon washed away any chance of the track finishing up the weekend Summer Sizzler festivities.  All the races planned for Saturday night have been postponed until Saturday, July 23rd which is the first date that works for the series...  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  After a second consecutive week of rainy weather on Friday night and a fifth rained out event of the season, Oglethorpe Speedway Park now turns it’s attention to the upcoming 10th Annual Summer Sizzler weekend on June 16, 17 and 18.  The historic half mile speedway will host the National Late Model Series for the first of two annual appearances during the Summer Sizzler.  Oglethorpe Speedway Park will also entertain fans with the Green Mamba Jet Car melting down a four door sedan, the first ever ‘Chipper Mania’, FREE four wheel drive test runs and racing in the Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Queen Bee and 440 divisions.  The weekend will culminate with the running of the Cindy McCurry Memorial 100 on Saturday night.  (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  The 10th Annual Summer Sizzler weekend at Oglethorpe Speedway Park will once again be the first visit from the very popular National Late Model Series.  But this year’s show will have a new twist for the weekly NASCAR divisions competing.  Track promoter Ted Austad hopes it will create a buzz for the drivers that run at the track every Friday night and give them something different for this annual summer special on June 16, 17 and 18.

(Savannah, GA)   Oglethorpe Speedway Park officials have been forced to cancel tonight’s NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series event.  Persistent rain in the area enveloped the speedway just before 5:00pm this afternoon.  The entire event will be moved to next Friday night including the very popular FREE Rides in the Race Cars for race fans of all ages.

Savannah, GA - The conclusion to a double header weekend at Oglethorpe Speedway Park saw Jacksonville, Florida’s David Browning take home his first career win on the Fastrak Champions Tour.  Browning had been chasing fellow Jacksonville hot shoe Steve Whitener for the majority of the 40-lap main event when Whitener was involved in an accident with the lapped car of Conyers, Georgia driver Gary Phillips.    (FULL STORY)

(Savannah, GA)  Thunderstorms that rolled through the coastal empire this evening have forced the cancellation of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series for this weekend at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The historic half mile speedway was hit with a heavy downpour that dropped an inch of rain.  High winds also knocked down trees along the roadway entering the NASCAR sanctioned speedway just west of downtown Savannah.  (FULL STORY)
