The 5th Annual Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series
opened this past Saturday to drivers as young as four years
old. The new Kiddie Kart class allows drivers four and five
years old to compete against one another before moving into
one of several World Karting Association divisions beginning
at age six. The new class stole the show this past Saturday
as Matthew Whitten passed J Jay Reich on the front stretch
after Reich had nabbed the lead out of turn two. The two
boys sped across the finish line separated by less than a
car length.
“That was cool to see the boys racing and having fun,” said
OSP starter Jim Horton. “The grandmothers were cheering for
them in the stands. The dads were standing next to each
other in the infield. It was really cool to see that first
race for these boys.”
In
other racing action for the younger generations, 10-year-old
Casey Coker clean swept the action in the Rookie I
division. Coker battled with Cliff Hudson during their
preliminary heat race. But, dusted the field in the feature
race. Hudson ended up second ahead of Michael Kessel, Anna
Singleton and Brody Taylor.
The
racing twins of Joseph and Justin Diekemper claimed week one
in the Rookie II division. The boys finished first and
second in the feature followed by Destiny Dalton, Tyler
Perry and Wesley Young. The Diekempers are the younger
brothers of 2005 Coca-Cola Late Model champion Robert
Diekemper.
Tyler Sherrod bested a slim field in the Junior Unrestrcited.
Sherrod had a relative easy time with Brittany Price and
newcomer Daniel Phillips.
The
largest field of the day was in the Outlaws class. Thirteen
drivers lined up to do battle on opening day. But nobody
could stay with 16-year-old Steven Howard. The late model
competitor came back to play for a day in the go karts and
walked away from Phillip McCullough and Chris Lanier in the
feature race. Father and son combination Bryan Lee and
Casey Lee finished fourth and fifth.
South Carolina’s Krystle Wolfe showed the boys that the
girls will be tough this season in the Stock Lights. Wolfe
clean swept the racing action on Saturday. Eric Robinson
came from the back of the field to challenge late, but had
to settle for second. Les Brinson, Eddie Morris and Lee
Crapse rounded out the top five.
Another South Carolina driver bested the field in the Stock
Medium class as Timothy Broschard beat Carl Bost and Billy
Dixon for the feature win. Brandon Loumillat and Michael
Bryan rounded out the top five Saturday in the Mediums.
The
Go Kart racers now are preparing for this week’s “Turkey
Trot 300” at Oglethorpe Speedway Park. Drivers in the
Rookie I, Rookie II, Junior Unrestricted, Stock Light, Stock
Medium, Stock Heavy, Senior Stock and Outlaws will compete
for larger purses in extended lap feature races. All
drivers will qualify and run heat races on Friday afternoon
(November 25) with the 30-lap features set for Saturday
(November 26).
