(Savannah, GA) Mike
Parkerson from Columbus, Georgia made a smooth move down the
front stretch on lap 24 to sneak past Savannah’s Russ Brown
for the lead in Friday night’s main event for the Crate Late
Model division. Parkerson then held off 2005 track champion
Robert Diekemper to win the NeSmith Chevrolet 40 at the 8th
Annual Showdown on the Coast. The race was the fourth leg
of the “Top Tracks Series” for the GM Performance crate
engine late model cars. The next race is October 29 at the
Dirt at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.
Russ Brown led
the field of thirty-five to green with Robert Diekemper
sliding into second for the first lap of the NeSmith
Chevrolet 40. The 120 mile-per-hour train chugged around
with Mike Parkerson third, Phillip Seifert fourth and Owen
Osteen fifth.
Parkerson
found an opening after Diekemper and Brown touched in turn
four. He shot past on the inside down the front stretch
snaring the lead away as Diekemper moved to second and
Seifert to third. Brown collected his sliding ride, but
dropped to fourth ahead of a fast moving Glenn Yawn.
The Columbus,
GA, driver, Parkerson, then held off Diekemper and the rest
of the field through six cautions in the final fourteen laps
to win the $3,000 top prize and a new GM Performance
engine. Diekemper settled for second ahead of Seifert,
Brown and Yawn. Owen Osteen ended up in sixth also
claiming the $600 loyalty bonus for best finishing driver
from the previous “Top Tracks Series” race. Osteen was the
winner the weekend prior to the Showdown on the Coast at the
“Top Tracks Series” event at Talladega Short Track in
Alabama. Corey Fletcher, David Browning, Shane Riner and
“Flat Footin” Casey Barrow rounded out the first ten.
A total of 44
drivers were on hand to attempt to qualify for the main
event in the “Top Tracks Series”. The series moves on to
the Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on October 28 before
culminating with a two day show at Dixie Speedway on
November 12.
Other Friday
night action at the 8th Annual “Showdown on the
Coast” included “The Walterboro Wildman” Terron Roberts
claiming the laurels in the Pure Stock main event. Roberts
held off Dan Douglas and Buster Kleckley despite having an
electrical problem that kept shutting the car off during the
feature.
“I had to keep
mashing the starter button,” said Roberts afterwards. “It’s
a good thing Dan was behind me. Somebody could have punted
me a couple times.”
Jimmy Swanson
claimed the honors as “Showdown on the Coast” champion for
the Four Star Security 440 Series division. Swanson has
been tough to beat in his #7 rocket and that proved to be
true once again as he held off Chris Hunter, Jason Rewis,
Dustin Collins and WR Rewis for the victory.
The 440
feature race also ended the points season for the entry
level four cylinder division. Guyton’s WR Rewis won the
championship. It marked the third straight year a Rewis
family member has won the division title. WR Rewis’ son
John had won the previous two year’s points titles. Rookie
of the Year honors went to Brian Nerich of Richmond Hill.
The final
night of the 8th Annual “Showdown on the Coast”
is set for tonight at 7pm. The “Budweiser 150” for the
National Late Models will complete a weekend full of racing
that has seen over 260 race cars compete. For more
