FATHER/SON TEAM CREATE SILLSLING NIGHT AT OGLETHORPE
By Katherine Adams

September 2, 2005

(Savannah, GA)  Clint Sills has won two season titles at Oglethorpe Speedway Park in the last six years.  This year he has been one of a number of past winners that have been shut out of victory lane.  In fact, Sills’ father, Walter Sills, has twice as many wins as his son while the two compete in separate divisions every Friday night.

For the first time in the 54-year history of the half mile speedplant, a father and son combination won feature races on the same race night this past Friday.  Walter Sills picked up his third win of the 2005 year in the Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks while son Clint finally had the chips fall his way nabbing his first win of the season in the highly competitive Love’s Seafood Street Stocks.

“This night is all about Clint getting his win,” said the proud father Walter.  “It’s great to see us both win.  But Clint’s win means a lot more to me.”

The younger Sills fought with rookie of the year contender Michael Helmly for the first six laps while current points leader ‘Rapid’ Ray Collins took off from the pack.  On e Sills made his way to second he set his sights on Collins for the lead spot.  Sills looked as though he would never get there until lap 17 when Collins pulled into the pit area with problems on his #32 Scilano’s Pizza Chevy.  That was all that Sills needed as he pulled away from a hard charging Donald Norby and Chris Litchfield to win his first of the year.

Norby and Litchfield were looking to take advantage of the early exit of Collins.  The three came into the night separated by 122 points.  Litchfield has now drawn within 38 points with this upcoming Friday night the final night for points within the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series season.

“It’s not over until it’s over,” said Danny Litchfield, crew chief for the TNT Truck Parts #4 Chevrolet.  “It’s not over ‘til it’s over.”

The night of Sills began with the ‘ageless one’ Walter Sills winning his third feature of the season.  Sills slid past Donnie Cannon on lap five and then held off Buster Kleckely, Terron Roberts and Dan Douglas for the final fifteen laps to capture the hardware for the Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks.

“Everybody says that the South Carolina boys can’t be beat in the Pure Stocks,” said NASCAR chief steward Faron Jenkins.  “Walter has done it three times this season already.  Plus, he and the others are racing legally.  They are all good drivers.”

Russ Brown also showed he has the talent to be one of the top drivers in the Coca-Cola Late Model division.  Brown went three wide out of turn four on lap 19 to pass Keith White and Jay Hendricks at the flag stand.  He then paced the field through three late race restarts to win for the third time in his rookie season at OSP.

Bobby Morris has come on strong during the final half of the 2005 NASCAR season in the Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks.  The defending champion waited patiently for Ricky Cannady to slip up just a little and when he did Morris jumped at the chance to take over the number one spot on the Budweiser scoreboard.  Cannady then valiantly held back Josh Carter, Charles Swann and Chris Johnson for second place behind Morris.

WR Rewis took over the points lead in the Four Star Security 440 division near the midway point of the season.  He had gone the whole season without winning the four foot weekly winner’s trophy for the 440 class.  Friday night he became the forty-fifth different winner this year at OSP and laid claim to his first victory of the year ahead of Ricky Kellam, James Jones, Michael Bean and Danny Herrington.

In the Queen Bees, Charissa Dudley returned to her winning ways by topping the field of ten lady drivers.  Current points leader April Barnes was second followed by Jennifer Sitgreaves.

Oglethorpe Speedway Park will conclude it’s 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series season with a full night of points races this Friday night.  Champions in the Coca-Cola Late Models, Love’s Seafood Street Stocks, Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks and Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks will be decided this Friday night.  Plus, the Four Star Security 440 and the Queen Bees will be racing.  The night will end with a huge “Champion’s Autograph Party” on the front stretch that will include music outside the Finish Line Pub.  The gates open at 6pm with racing set for 8pm.  Additional information is available by calling OSP at 912-964-8200 or by visiting their website at www.ospracing.net.
