(Savannah, GA) As a record
season inches closer to the end at Oglethorpe Speedway Park,
a few familiar faces returned to the winner’s circle for a
change Friday night. A record forty-three different
competitors have visited the illustrious OSP Victory Lane
this season. More than any season before in the 54 year
history of the famous half mile speedway just west of
downtown Savannah.
This past
Friday night saw Shane Riner slide back into victory lane
for the Coca-Cola Late Models while Chris Litchfield topped
the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks. Points leader Dan Douglas
moved closer to a title clinch with a victory in the
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks and Bobby Morris
returned to win the Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks main
event. The Four Star Security 440’s was won by Phillip
Dickerson while April Barnes topped the field of Queen Bee
competitors.
Shane Riner
left little doubt in the spectators minds Friday night
during the Southeastern Auto Auction NASCAR night. Riner
worked past sixteen-year-old Branden Yawn half way through
the Coca-Cola Late Model feature and then cruised to his
third victory of the season. Yawn would settle for second
ahead of Russ Brown, points leader Robert Diekemper and
rookie of the year points leader Sean Meeks.
Chris
Litchfield has an up and down season in 2005. The
pre-season favorite in the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks has
either had glorious nights with top three runs or one of his
numerous DNF nights. This past Friday Litchfield had a
positive night winning both his heat race and the feature.
Brian Barnes climbed six spots to finish in second ahead of
Clint Sills, ‘Rapid’ Ray Collins and Albert Cosnahan.
In the
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks, Dan Douglas snuck past
a hard charging Charles Williams to steal away the lead. He
never looked back posting the victory and moving closer to a
title clinch in the V8 powered entry level division. Buster
Kleckley was second followed by Walter Sills, Terron Roberts
and Williams.
The defending
champion in the Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks flexed his
muscle this past weekend. Bobby Morris started dead last in
the field after experiencing problems in his qualifying heat
race. He slowly worked his way up through the field before
finally taking over the lead from Chris Johnson on lap 9.
He then went on to win his third race of the season at OSP.
Josh Carter was second. Charles Swann third followed by
Josh Parrish and AJ Horton.
South
Effingham High School is producing Oglethorpe Speedway Park
victors every week the past month. Recent graduates Casey
Barrow and Sean Meeks have won feature races during the
month of August and Friday night another 2004 graduate,
Phillip Dicekrson, made it into victory lane. Dickerson
topped the strong field of Four Star Security 440 drivers
beating Michael Bean and fourteen-year-old Cody Brant to the
line. WR Rewis and Jason Rewis completed the top five in
the 440’s.
April Barnes
waited until Charissa Dudley made a mistake on the final lap
of the Queen Bee feature on Friday night. Barnes slid
underneath and coasted to the finish line and victory lane.
Dudley was second followed by Heather Hopkins, Jennifer
Sitgreaves and Angela Riner whose husband Shane had just won
the late model main event.
Oglethorpe
Speedway Park returns to action this Friday night (September
2) as Coca-Cola and Adventure Radio present the 2005 “Fan
Appreciation” Night at OSP. Race fans can win one of
hundreds of prizes that include a complete weekend package
of tickets to the Atlanta Motor Speedway events at the end
of October. All six divisions will be in action with
extended lap features planned for all, out of car
introductions and additional prize money on the line. The
gates open at 6pm with racing set for 8pm.
