(Savannah, GA) Mark Davis
made his daddy proud on Tuesday night. The Savannah hot
shoe powered his TNT Truck Parts Chevrolet to victory lane
in the 2nd Annual Race for the Shrine at
Oglethorpe Speedway Park. Davis’ father is a member of the
Alee Shrine Bryan County Chapter and the veteran OSP
competitor wanted to win the race for his dad.
“We are giving
$500 of our winnings back to the Shrine,” said Davis
afterwards. “They are a great fraternity of men working for
our children’s betterment. This is a special win for our
team and will be for a long time.”
Guyton’s
Albert Cosnahan and Hardeeville, South Carolina’s Dan
Douglas also were victors on a night that raised money and
awareness for the Alee Shrine Temple. The money generated
through the second annual auto racing event benefits the
numerous Shriner’s Hospitals in the United States and Canada
which cater to burned and crippled children. The hospitals
do not accept third party billing and operate solely on the
fund raising activities supported by the hundreds of Shriner
groups throughout the country.
“The race is a
very popular event for all of the groups around Savannah,”
said Alee Dune Cat HL Waters. “We all look forward to the
annual race event at OSP. It’s fun and the motorsports fans
are very supportive of our efforts for the children.”
Mark Davis
shot out to the early race lead with defending OSP late
model champion Bobby Morris in tow. Morris worked hard to
rattle Davis but ended up getting caught up in lapped
traffic losing ground on Davis in the final laps of the
special 30-lapper. Davis won the race ahead of Morris.
Lonnie Brant was third followed by Dennis Morris and Russ
Brown. Sixteen late models were on hand for the special
event Tuesday night.
Albert
Cosnahan has been the bridesmaid for three of the last four
races in the Love’s Seafood Street Stock division at OSP.
Cosnahan knocked the monkey from his back on Tuesday night
holding Rincon’s Chris Litchfield at bay and winning the
30-lap main. Bloomingdale’s Brian Barnes was third followed
by Clint Sills and Chris Casteel. Fifteen cars competed in
the $1000 to win event.
The story was
all Dan Douglas in the Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stock
race on Tuesday night. The current NASCAR points leader at
OSP led every single lap of the 30-lap, caution free race.
Walter Sills ran second all night followed by Donnie Cannon,
Terron Roberts and Don Douglas. Only eleven pure stock cars
were on hand chasing the $500 top prize on Tuesday night.
Oglethorpe
Speedway Park cranks up the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series
action again this Friday, August 5. The Coca-Cola Late
Models, Love’s Seafood Street Stocks, Southern Racing
Supplies Pure Stocks and Four Star Security 440s will be
competing along with a special event for the Sunset
Novelties Mini Stocks.
The US Highway
80 Mini Stock Challenge takes place on Friday at Oglethorpe
Speedway Park before heading west on US Highway 80 to
Swainsboro Raceway on Saturday night. Drivers in the Mini
Stock division will compete for $750 to win each night as
well as accumulating points towards their “track team”. The
track drivers with most points will win the “Challenge Cup”
in the first team competition between drivers at the two
half mile speedways. The losing track’s promoter must also
wear a pink tutu at the winning track’s race the following
weekend and flag the race for the mini stocks.
“I have
already sized up Paul Purvis for his leotard,” said OSP
promoter Ted Austad. “He’s gonna look cute in that girlie
girlie outfit.”
The gates open
at 6pm on Friday night with racing set to go green at
8:00pm. For additional information, contact the speedway at
