(Savannah, GA) Shane Riner
of Rincon knocked the monkey off his back this past Friday
night as last year’s Coca-Cola ‘Rookie of the Year’ winner
picked up his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series feature win
of the season. Joining Riner in the hallowed winner’s
circle at the historic half mile speedway was Josh Carter of
Guyton who also notched his first victory of the year in the
Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks and Rincon’s Danny Herrington
in the Four Star Security 440. Terron Roberts, the
Walterboro Wildman, won for the fourth time in the Southern
Racing Supplies Pure Stocks while Donald Norby continued his
win streak in the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks.
Riner made
easy work of the late model feature. He jumped to the early
lead and then held off a late race charge by Bloomingdale’s
Robert Diekemper to win the race. Current points leader
Donnie Bazemore finished in third followed by Russ Brown and
Lonnie Brant.
Josh Carter
has been fighting all year to get his shot at winning.
Friday night the seas parted for the veteran Sunset
Novelties Mini Stock racer as he took over the lead and then
never looked back posting the victory over a tough Randall
Wegmann. Mark Susen, Chris Johnson and Bobby Morris rounded
out the first five across the stripe with Johnson’s fourth
place finish enough to move him into the points lead for the
first time this year.
It was an
emotional win for Rincon’s Danny Herrington in the Four Star
Security 440 feature race. Herrington’s wife gave birth to
their first daughter in late March of this year. Rebbecca
Lynn Herrington was born with heart defects and has endured
three surgeries since her birth. This was only the second
time this season that Herrington has been able to race and
he took the lead in the final turn of the final lap for the
win. Clayton Floyd ended up second ahead of Clayton Fail,
Jr., Jason Rewis and Phillip Dickerson.
Midway’s
Donald Norby kept his winning streak alive in the Love’s
Seafood Street Stock division. The 1999 divisional champion
won for the second straight week increasing his points lead
over Chris Litchfield who finished in third and bypassed
“Rapid” Ray Collins in the street stock point standings.
Albert Cosnahan finished in second with Brian Barnes and
Clint Sills fourth and fifth behind Litchfield.
In the
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stock feature, Terron Roberts,
the Walterboro Wildman, won for the fifth time this season.
Dan Douglas was second as the two veteran drivers maintained
their grasp on the top two spots in the pure stock points.
Anthony Parker, Chris Hinely and Walter Sills completed the
top five with Charles Williams, Greg Annas, Reverend Alfred
Banks, Grant Grotyohann and Cari Howze rounded out the top
ten.
Oglethorpe
Speedway Park resumes racing action this Friday night with a
complete round of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing
presented by Coca-Cola along with the fifth annual Faster
Pastor race. This year’s Faster Pastor V will included
church leaders from Hartford, CT; Butler, PA and eastern
Tennessee along with several pastors from the Savannah and
Hilton Head, SC area. The gates open at 6pm with racing set
for 8pm. Additonal information is available by calling
912-964-8200 or by visiting
