(Savannah, GA) Oglethorpe
Speedway Park dodged rain drops for the first fifteen
minutes of Friday’s NASCAR Mid-Season Championships. But,
the historic half mile was able to complete the double
feature event crowning the drivers accumulating the most
points during the special event marking the half way
juncture of the season. Chris Johnson and Shane Riner stood
along with mid-season honors in the Sunset Novelties Mini
Stocks and Coca-Cola Late Models while multiple drivers were
awarded the honor in both the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks
and Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks.
Guyton’s Shane
Riner used a strong runner-up finish in feature race number
two for the Coca-Cola Late Models to solidify his mid-season
title. Riner finished seventh in the first twenty lap
feature garnering more points than others winning the
crown. The good all around finish also helped Riner gain
back some points in the overall NASCAR standings catapulting
him to third in the OSP points. Only forty-five point
separate drivers in third through ninth place heading into
this Friday’s match-up. Donnie Bazemore continues to lead
the points over Robert Diekemper by thirty-one.
Another
Effingham County driver, Chris Johnson clean swept the
racing action in the Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks on Friday
night. Johnson has a three race win streak and has narrowed
the points gap between himself and division leader Charles
Swann to six points. Swann finished second in both races
the other night at OSP. Both drivers have three feature
wins on the season thus far.
It was a
three-way tie for the NASCAR Mid-Season Championships in the
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks. More than likely none
of three drivers would want it to be any other way as the
“Walterboro Wildman” Terron Roberts, Hardeeville’s Dan
Douglas and Richmond Hill’s Don Douglas all tied for the
mid-season honors. The three drivers are also teammates in
the entry-level division at OSP with Roberts on top in the
overall points and defending his season crown from 2004.
Don Douglas was the only of the three to get into victory
lane on Friday night. But, the other two finished strong
enough to earn the three-way title.
Rapid Ray
Collins of Ellabell nabbed a feature win last Friday night
that also pulled him into a tie for the NASCAR Mid-Season
honor in the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks. Collins
accumulated enough points to tie Bluffton’s Timmy Dasher for
the title. Dasher finished second to Collins in the second
feature while finishing third in the first feature behind
new overall points leader Donald Norby of Midway and
Bloomingdale’s Brian Barnes.
On the
strength of their showing this past Friday night, Donald
Norby and Ray Collins bypassed Chris Litchfield in the
overall points for the Street Stocks. Norby finds himself
in first with an eighteen point lead over Collins and
twenty-three back to Litchfield. Norby won the Street Stock
title in 1999 and has been among the top five in each year
since. Litchfield finished as runner-up in the divisional
points last year and has been among the top three the past
three seasons.
Wrapping up
the holiday weekend championships were the Four Star
Security 440 and WR Rewis taking home the hardware over Tom
Egner and Jason Rewis. Clay Fail, Junior and Lee Miles
rounded out the top five from the front wheel drive four
cylinders.
Oglethorpe
Speedway Park cranks back up this Friday night (July 8) at
8:00pm with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series. Coca-Cola Late
Models, Love’s Seafood Street Stocks, Sunset Novelties Mini
Stocks, Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks and the Four
Star Security 440 will be competing along with the Custom
Marine “Waterless Boat Races” taking place. Drivers will
compete with boats attached to their cars. There are no
trailers used so the competitors merely drag their boats
around the half mile speedway trying to crash the other
driver’s boats while keeping their boat secured. The last
driver with their boat intact is declared the race winner.
For more information, contact the speedway at 912-964-8200
