SPEEDWAY PLANS BOAT CRASH-FEST THIS FRIDAY
by Katherine Adams

July 5, 2005

(Savannah, GA)  It’s the “Tournament of Destruction” boat style this Friday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The historic half mile speedway will host it’s second annual “Waterless Boat Races” presented by Custom Marine of Statesboro. The wild, crash-filled event features cars pulling old boats around the track.  There are no trailers used in this smash it up event.  Drivers merely drag their boats while attempting to dislodge their competitors boats from their car.  The last driver with his boat intact and attached to their car is declared the winner.

“It is total boat destruction,” said OSP promoter Ted Austad.  “The object is to knock your opponents boat from their car before some one does it to you.  It’s wild and there are lots of crazy crashes.”

Austad has been collecting the old boats for the past six months.  Various friends of the track have dropped off these unwanted yard trash so this Friday night (July 8) he will give the boats to competitors and let them tear ‘em apart in a spectacular show that will leave all ages wanting to see it again.

“We had a really good finish to last year’s waterless boat race,” Austad said.  “Kenny Siemienkiewicz blew through two boats at the top of turn three leaving nothing but busted up wood panels all over the place.  The crowd loved it and Kenny was the winner.”

The Custom Marine “Waterless Boat Races” will be the final event on the schedule this Friday night.  The debris left on the track is too hazardous for the speedway to conduct any type of race afterwards.  The NASCAR divisions will run their events first with the boat race scheduled for 10:30 on Friday night.

The boat race is open to any driver 16 years of age or older.  Cars pulling the boats must have all the glass removed (except for the windshield) along with the plastic lenses, headlamps and trim moulding.  All cars must have working lap and shoulder harness and the drivers must have a Snell 95 approved helmet.  There is no cost to enter and OSP will provide the boat to be used.  Interested parties should contact the speedway offices at 912-964-8200 or visit www.ospracing.net.  Space is limited and you may not bring your own boat without prior race approval.
