RAIN POSTPONES SUMMER SIZZLER CONCLUSION AT OSP
by Katherine Adams

June 18, 2005

(Savannah, GA)  The weather woes that have dampened the spirits of race fans and racers competing at Savannah’s historic half mile speedway, Oglethorpe Speedway Park, have once again been dealt the losing hand.  The rain storms that moved through the Savannah area on Saturday afternoon washed away any chance of the track finishing up the weekend Summer Sizzler festivities.  All the races planned for Saturday night have been postponed until Saturday, July 23rd which is the first date that works for the series and the track.

“This is a trend like I have never experienced in my sixteen year career,” said track general manager Ted Austad.  “We just cannot catch a break this year.  The racing on Friday night looked to be leading into a great night tonight.  It’s disappointing.”

DeWayne Johnson was the fast timer on Friday night.  But, lost the pole position during heat race qualifiers when Chesley Dixon shot past on the high side.  Dixon will lead the field to green next month when the Cindy McCurry Memorial 100 takes place.  All twenty-nine drivers that entered the weekend’s National Late Model Series event will be eligible for the race on July 23rd.

The Summer Sizzler feature events for the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks, Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks and Four Star Security 440s have also been postponed to Saturday, July 23rd.  All the positions that the drivers qualified for through time trials and heat races will be kept intact with only the features being run on the make-up date.

Donald Norby flexed his muscle in the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks capturing the fast timer award and the division’s first heat race.  That combination along with another top six in the second heat has placed the 1999 Street Stock champion on the pole for the race on Saturday, July 23rd.

Terron Roberts is successfully defending his title in the Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks.  Roberts was the fast timer on Friday night topping a field of twenty-five pure stocks.  He also won his heat race and finished very well in the second round to snare the pole.  His teammate Dan Douglas will start outside with newcomer to the Pure Stocks Chris Hinely starting third.

“The car was real good tonight,” said Hinely.  “This car can win that feature race.”

The Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks ran their Summer Sizzler feature on Friday night.  Chris Johnson won his third of the season and moved very close to points leader Charles Swann who dropped out of the feature race early.  Troy Godbee was second followed by Randall Wegmann.

On a sad note, Dale Miles, driver of the Mini Stock #13 at OSP passed away on Saturday morning.  Miles was having one of his best seasons at OSP currently running among the top seven drivers in points.  Miles was fifty-four.

OSP takes a week off of stock car racing this upcoming week to host the USHRA Monster Jam Summer Heat program featuring the world’s best known Monster Trucks.  Grave Digger, Destroyer, Reptoid, Bad News and more will be competing at Oglethorpe Speedway Park on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (June 23 – 25) at 7:30pm.
