Savannah, GA
- The largest single night crowd of the season was on hand
Saturday night for the United States Hot Rod Association Monster
Jam Summer Heat Series at Oglethorpe Speedway Park. A standing
room only crowd of 6,738 fans showed up to watch the world
famous Grave Digger crush and crunch his way to the Freestyle
title beating out Summit and Equalizer by generating more
fan applause. The meter bounced against the red line for a
half minute after Grave Digger's performance was completed.
Bad News was the winner in Monster Truck Drag Racing as he
beat out Reptoid for the speed title on Saturday night.
"These fans were
crazy," said Gary Porter, driver of Grave Digger. "When you
can hear them in the truck while your lining up, it gives
you a little shot of adrenaline that makes you want to give
them a real good show."
Grave Digger did
not disappoint his fans as Porter and the famous panel wagon
completed the Savannah clean sweep with a win in Freestyle
Sunday afternoon. Bad News also completed the sweep with a
victory in the one on one drag racing competition.
It almost looked
as though Grave Digger would not be able to compete in Sunday's
Freestyle when he broke a transmission during early drag race
competition. Porter and his crew worked feverishly to repair
the truck for their trademark Freestyle and with less than
thirty seconds remaining on the clock they fired up the truck,
ran the Freestyle and once again won it hands down.
"I didn't know if
we were going to get the Digger fixed in time," Porter said.
"We pride ourselves in having the means to fix anything and
today we proved it. But honestly, I was worried about the
time."
United States Hot
Rod Association officials and all the competing Monster Truck
teams were pleased with the facility and are making plans
for the return of the Monster Jam Summer Heat Series to Oglethorpe
Speedway Park next season. Event organizers are also interested
in bringing a Freestyle Motocross and Xtreme Motocross event
to Savannah and OSP next year.
