GET CRAZY AT THE
SUMMER SIZZLER

By Katherine Adams

June 6, 2005

(Savannah, GA)  Oglethorpe Speedway Park promoter Ted Austad is always looking to add something new to the often time routine events at the historic half mile speedway just west of downtown Savannah.  The track’s upcoming 10th Annual Summer Sizzler weekend will bring racers and race fans from all over the southeast to witness 130 mile per hour competition, paint swapping stock car action and great family fun.  Austad is sure to emphasize the family fun aspect with a couple of crazy activities on Friday, June 17th.

Austad will welcome back his long time friend Doug Rose along with his wildly popular Green Mamba Jet Car on the Summer Sizzler’s Opening Night.  Rose is an eleven time national jet car drag racing champion.  But the sixty-one year old double prosthesis showman no longer competes with this F-7 jet fighter engine powered race car.  He will merely chain the car to a large four door sedan, fire up his afterburner and melt the car down with the 6,000 degree exhaust.  It will create an unbelievable display of sparks, fire and smoke that will leave everyone howling in excitement.

“It’s the world’s best redneck fireworks show,” said Austad.  “He blows through the car like a blow torch cutting apart a ship along the Savannah river.  It’s awesome.”

If the Green Mamba Jet Car display is not enough for you consider coming to the opening night fun of the Summer Sizzler, Austad suggests coming to see “The Craziest Things You Have Ever Wanted To Chip” taking place the same evening.  The nutty 40-year-old promoter has contracted with a sponsor to have a large wood chipper on the property in front of the grandstands.  He and interested fans will throw various objects through the chipper in between racing events.

“I already have a box of 50,000 pain balls,” said Austad.  “My daughter Katie wants to throw a watermelon through it.  Who knows what else we will find before June 17th.”

Anyone interested in chipping various items can contact Austad at Oglethorpe Speedway Park and get on the list.  He will allow each individual a free ticket to the grandstand for that night and then the fans will vote on which item is the “Craziest Thing They Have Ever Seen Chipped”.  The winning chipper will receive an OSP Prize Package.

“Someone called the other day and said they were bringing a fifty-pound fish to throw through the chipper,” added Austad.  “Maybe we can get someone to stand on the other side of the chipper as the chipped fish flies out.”

The Summer Sizzler weekend opens with the Green Mamba Jet Car, the Craziest Thing You Have Ever Seen Chipped and the opening night of stock car racing on Friday, June 17.  Interested chippers or fans can contact the speedway at 912-964-8200 or visit www.ospracing.net.
