(Savannah, GA) Oglethorpe
Speedway Park officials have been forced to cancel tonight’s
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series event. Persistent rain in the
area enveloped the speedway just before 5:00pm this
afternoon. The entire event will be moved to next Friday
night including the very popular FREE Rides in the Race Cars
for race fans of all ages. Coca-Cola Late Models, Love’s
Seafood Street Stocks, Sunset Novelties Mini Stocks,
Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks and the Four Star
Security 440s will be competing at next week’s rescheduled
program.
“We cannot
seem to catch a break with the weather this season,” said
track general manager Ted Austad. “This is our fourth
rain-out in nine weeks of racing.”
Oglethorpe
Speedway Park hopes the weather pattern changes before a
three week stretch in June and early July which will feature
three of the historic half mile speedway’s most popular
annual events. The Summer Sizzler 100 featuring the
National Late Model Tour takes place on June 16, 17 and 18
while the following weekend the United States Hot Rod
Association brings it’s Monster Trucks to Savannah. The 4th
of July weekend and the NASCAR Mid-Season Championships are
also one of the best attended events each year.
“The events
later this month bring in crowds between 4,500 and 6,500
nightly,” added Austad. “We have no control over the
weather. But, I hope and pray that we catch a break in this
pattern before those event weekends.”
