THUNDERSTORMS CANCEL EVENTS AT OSP.
NEXTEL CUP STARS VISIT FRIDAY, MAY 27.

May 20, 2005

(Savannah, GA)  Thunderstorms that rolled through the coastal empire this evening have forced the cancellation of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series for this weekend at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The historic half mile speedway was hit with a heavy downpour that dropped an inch of rain.  High winds also knocked down trees along the roadway entering the NASCAR sanctioned speedway just west of downtown Savannah.

The speedway will now begin preparing for next weekend’s visit from the stars of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for the 2nd Annual Race of Champions presented by NAPA Auto Care Centers.  The 1988 NASCAR Cup Series champion Bill Elliott will lead a list of competitors visiting Savannah which includes 2003 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth, ‘Mr. Excitement’ Jimmy Spencer and one of NASCAR’s young guns Casey Mears who is the son of four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears.

The drivers will meet with race fans allowing them an opportunity for photographs and autographs Friday night, May 27, at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  They will entertain the fans for a couple of hours prior to hopping behind the wheel of OSP’s high-powered dirt late models for some wheel to wheel NASCAR racing.

“I have never raced on dirt before,” said Wisconsin’s Matt Kenseth.  “I have always wanted to try running a dirt late model.  Elliott said this is the track to race on for my first time.  So I’m booked.”

Bill Elliott won the pair of races run at last year’s inaugural Race of Champions at OSP.  He out ran Sterling Marlin and Dave Blaney in each of the races using OSP’s street stock racers.

“I am looking forward to letting it hang out in a late model in Savannah,” said the fifteen time most popular driver in NASCAR’s elite series, Bill Elliott. “The track was real fast in the street cars last year.  I can’t wait to let it hang out this year in late models.”

Tickets are still available for the NASCAR Nextel Cup “Race of Champions” presented by NAPA Auto Care Centers.  They are $25 for adults and $10 for children ages two through twelve.  The gates will open at noon on Friday, May 27.  The VIP area opens at 4:00pm with the drivers meeting the race fans to sign autographs and take photos at 6:00pm.  The racing action begins at 8:00pm.
