Twenty-eight late models qualified and ran heat races to set up the field for Saturday night’s 100 lap feature paying $10,000 to the winner. In the Four Star Security 440’s it was Brian Balcom in Victory lane again. Balcom who is 2nd in points to Danny Harrington finished ahead of Jeremey McDonald and Ricky Kellam. McDonald tired several times to take the lead, but Brian held him at bay. Brian told speedway staff after the event “This has been a great year, but after next week the 7 car will be up for sale, going to the best offer.” Danny Harrington finished the night in the fourth position. Unofficial points tallies show Danny just has to start next Friday to bring home the 2006 Championship in the 440’s.

The big upset of the night came in the Love’s Seafood Street Stocks when the caution flag flew on lap 14 of the 20 lap feature for the top three drivers putting Doc Leggett in the 1st place position and John McCosker in second. It was a tough battle between Leggett and McCosker but Legget was able to stay out front to bring home his first Street Stock feature win. McCosker came in second with current points leader Donald Norby in third. Brian Barnes finished fourth with Chris Litchfield finishing fifth.

Swainsboro Driver Takes Round One of Boo Koo Challenge

(Pooler, GA) Swainsboro Raceway Super Street points leader Willis McKenzie driving the #96 went to victory lane Friday, July 21st in round one of the “Boo Koo Challenge” between Oglethorpe Speedway Park Street Stocks drivers and Swainsboro Raceway Super Street drivers. Round two to be held at Swainsboro Raceway on Saturday, July 29th.

OSP’s Love’s Seafood Street Stock point’s leader Donald Norby, #16 and Swainsboro’s McKenzie #96 battled for first place for numerous laps as fans from both tracks cheered their driver on to victory. On lap 11 Norby had some trouble on the back stretch and even though he fought hard there wasn’t enough laps to get back up front, Norby finished the race 7th. Swainsboro’s McKenzie was quote in Victory Lane as to saying “This is the first time I’ve ever been to Oglethorpe, it was awesome. The track was great.” Chris Litchfield from Guyton came in second and Bloomingdale’s Brian Barnes rounded out the top three.

In the Coca-Cola Late Models were the point’s battle between Guyton’s Shane Riner and Bloomingdale’s Bobby Oglesby has been tight. After a wreck in the heat race Oglesby did not compete in the feature race and Riner went on to win the feature, giving Riner a cushion in the points race at least for a week as Oglesby fell from 2nd in the points to third. Bloomingdale’s Lonnie Brant came in second and Guyton’s Albert Cosnahan 3rd.

Walter Sills of Bloomingdale won the feature for the Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks with Buster Kleckly of Ridgeland coming in second and Terron Roberts of Walterboro in third. Buster Kleckly continues to lead the points in the Pure Stock division.

There was no one sitting during the O.C. Welch Mini Stock feature race as Guyton’s Randall Wegmann and Bobby Morris also of Guyton raced side by side for most of the 15-lap feature, but at the checkered flag it was Wegmann who won by a couple inches. Morris finished second and Roger McKenzie of Swainsboro came in third.

It was Michael Bean of Guyton who won the Four Star Security 440 feature, followed by Danny Harrington (2nd) and Phillip Dickerson (3rd) also of Guyton. Bean and Harrington who work on each others cars during the week took the opportunity in Victory Lane to put their cars nose to nose and do a dual car burn-out for the fans.

Oglethorpe Speedway would also like to thank the Georgia Army National Guard for bringing Greg Biffle’s #16 Nextel Cup car out to the speedway for fans to see and have their photos taken by.

A Night of First Time Feature Winners

Friday, July 14th’s racing action was anything but the ordinary. OSP had two new feature winners, Buddy Jacoby in the O.C. Welch Mini Stocks and Grady McElhaney in the Four Star Security 440’s, and then there was Pastor Doug McCart in the 6th Annual Faster Pastor event taking home his first Victory.

The 6th Annual Faster Pastor Race presented by Coca-Cola had a dozen local pastor’s signed up for the event but only ten were able to start the feature. Pastor Alfred Banks of Daniel Baptist in Richmond Hill (also the track chaplain) was unable to attend for health reasons and Pastor Sean Faircloth of Living Faith of God in Guyton was also unable to attend the event.

Returning Pastor’s were Pastor Rick Rushing of Goshen Methodist in Rincon (3 previous wins) and Pastor Doug McCart of First Baptist Church of Brooklet both have competed in the previous five Pastor races. Pastor Tom Osborne of Friendship Baptist in Statesboro had competed in the three previous races and Pastor Bill Black of Riverside in Savannah the previous two events and went on to win those two races.

Competing in their second Faster Pastor race were Pastor Eric Hayes of Baptist Church at Ebenezer and Deacon Ryan Edenfield of Fellowship Assembly of God in Garden City. Newcomers to the event were Pastor Michael Beck of Maranatha Assembly of God in Rincon, Pastor Kathy Israel-McLeod (the first female Pastor) of Woodlawn Methodist in Garden City, Pastor Buck Ormston of New Life Christian in Rincon and Pastor Storman Glass or Corner Stone in Statesboro.

The Pastor’s raced in Southern Racing Supplies Pure Stocks furnished by drivers who compete every Friday night at OSP with the exception of the car driven by Pastor Osborne who drove the #57 of JC Heerema who has been in retirement for the past two season’s, “My car has been in all the previous Pastor’s events and I wouldn’t have missed this one” said Heerema.
